    DIET AND HEALTH TIPS FOR KIDNEY PATIENTS

    i. Kidney disease in general calls for certain diet changes; Controlling blood pressure, blood sugar level, cholesterol level, body weight, smoking and alcohol avoidance is important to avoid kidney damage.

    ii. Afflicted persons should restrict sodium intake, salt is minimized from diet. So, avoiding salty food articles like sea food, wafers etc is necessary. Soy sauce, ketch-ups, pickles, chicken powder, frozen dinners that are high in sodium and preservatives need to be avoided

    iii. Potassium intake is regulated in kidney failure and so low potassium containing food sources like carrots, cabbage, apples etc are preferred.

    Everyone needs protein. However, protein breaks down into wastes the kidneys must remove. Large amounts of protein make the kidneys work harder. High-quality proteins such as meat, fish, and eggs create fewer wastes than other sources of protein. Beans, whole grains, soy products, nuts and nut butters, and dairy products can also be good sources of protein. Most people eat more protein than they need. Eating high-quality protein and smaller portions of protein can help protect kidneys by not over-straining their work.

    • • Patients are advised to take low phosphorus food rather than high phosphorus food like fresh fruits & vegetables. Limit the amount of dairy products like cheese, butter, yoghurt as it contains large amount of phosphorus.
    • • As per Ayurveda, laghu and supachya i.e. diet which is easy to digest and contain less of protein and fats, should be taken
    • • It is advisable for kidney patients to take medicines with warm water.
    • • If possible, n morning, in empty stomach amla (Indian gooseberry) is considered very beneficial for kidney patients.
    • • By maintaining a healthy weight and doing pranayam or light exercises for 30 minutes regularly, limiting the salt intake, not drinking too much alcohol can help to control your blood pressure.
    • • Once in a week, coconut water is recommended to kidney patients.
    • • Junk food, non-veg, preservative & stale food should be avoided.
    • • Skimmed milk (without cream) should be taken.
    • • Fresh seasonal fruits except citrus fruits should be avoided.

    Lower-phosphorus alternatives include

    • fresh fruits and vegetables
    • breads
    • pasta
    • rice
    • corn and rice cereals
    • light-colored sodas

    Foods higher in phosphorus to be avoided include

    • large portions of meat, fish and dairy foods
    • bran cereals and oatmeal
    • beans and nuts
    • colas

    Low potassium food

    • Apple, cranberries, grapes, grapefruit, honeydew, mangoes, peaches, plum, melon pineapples, strawberries, cauliflower, onions, radish, zucchini squash, lettuce, tortillas, red bell peppers, apples, peaches, carrots, green beans.

    Foods high in potassium to be avoided include

    • Bananas, oranges, potatoes, tomatoes.
    • Choose fresh vegetables over canned vegetables
